Without an adequate quantity and quality of books, kids' reading levels suffer, and low reading levels lead to higher high school drop-out rates.
Building Classroom Libraries
In an effort to boost reading levels in D.C., Companies for Causes is stocking classroom libraries, starting with Capitol Hill area school Miner Elementary. These classroom libraries will feature a wide array of challenging and enjoyable books matched to kids' reading levels.
Your donation will help elevate students' reading comprehension, fluency, independent reading, and critical thinking skills to propel them through K-12 education and beyond.
Alarming Facts:
-
Students are 4x times more likely to leave high school without a diploma if they do not read proficiently by the 3rd grade.
-
Students who reach their grade reading level by the 4th grade, increase their chances of graduating dramatically (to 91%).
-
Only 23% of 4th grade students in D.C. read proficiently.
- Washington D.C. has the highest median income in the nation, yet some D.C. public school classrooms have few or no books!
